THE BENEFITS OF CHOOSING ZINC

A BETTER Combination of strength, toughness, rigiditY

MDL has been providing casting services for over 80 years. We manufacture castings in zinc alloys because they provide the perfect combination of strength, toughness and rigidity. As a result, the performance and economical castings outweigh other materials.

Considering all of its properties including the strength and durability, zinc is the perfect choice for saving time and money whilst maintaining casting integrity and finishing options.

Reduced Assembly Required

Assembly operations can be reduced when the entire part is cast as a single unit. This can significantly reduce cost by reducing assembly operations.

Surface Finish Options

Zinc allows for a number of finishing and surface options. These allow you to achieve exceptional aesthetic characteristics for your product.

Less Machining Required

With the correct design and pre-production, the requirement for machining can be reduced because zinc castings are produced to or close to netshape.

Reduced Material Costs

The fluidity, strength and stiffness of Zinc alloys allow for castings to include designs with thin wall sections to reduce weight and material used.

Improved Production Speed

Because of lower temperature requirements, Zinc die casting processes are much faster than aluminium or magnesium ones.

Increased Tool Life

Tooling for producing zinc die-castings has an exceptionally long working life, helping to spread costs over a greater volume of components in order to minimise unit costs.

HOW DOES ZINC STACK UP TO OTHER MATERIALS?

Aluminium Castings

Zinc allows for more precise production than aluminium. Therefore, your product can include smaller draft angles, smaller and longer cored holes and thinner walls.

Zinc castings are also less likely to leak when compared to aluminium. As a result, aluminium can expose porosity in the casting.

It is also worth noting that on average zinc castings have a much longer tool life, better machinability and also lowering overall costs.

Magnesium Castings

Using zinc instead of magnesium allows process costs to be reduced. Zinc can also deliver a higher level of precision and corrosion resistance.

Zinc also has superior tensile strength and elongation which means you can create lower draft angles and reach superior formability.

Finally, zinc alloys are much more suitable for castings that rely on strength and precision whilst maintaining a low overall cost ratio.

Machined Steel

Steel is cheaper than zinc alloy but using zinc and incorporating its properties into your design means you can focus on producing castings with a much higher degree of precision.

Reproducing complex features using steel will add cost of extra assembly methods.

Zinc has many advantages but the most important one is that it allows you to produce complex components without comprising on cost and time.

FURTHER BENEFITS OF USING ZINC FOR YOUR CASTING PROJECTS

MDL specialises in Zinc castings because they allow closer tolerances to be moulded than other metals or plastics. Furthermore, less casting flaws are encountered resulting in lower machining costs. Which is a major consideration for most projects.

In addition Zinc’s thin wall capability results in smaller, lighter castings with less draft angle than other materials.
